Common Requirements
Regardless of country, most passport photos share standard requirements:
Background must be plain, light-colored, and free of shadows or patterns. White, off-white, light gray, or pale blue are universally accepted.
Expression should be neutral. Most countries prohibit smiling, though some accept a natural closed-mouth expression. Eyes must be open and clearly visible.
Glasses are increasingly prohibited. Even when allowed, frames must not obscure the eyes, and there must be no glare on lenses. Many authorities now recommend removing glasses entirely.
Full face visibility means hair must be pulled back from the face, and head coverings are only permitted for religious reasons with documentation.
Using Our Resize Tool
Our resize tool includes presets for common passport photo dimensions. Select your country’s preset, upload your photo, and download a perfectly sized image ready for printing.
For best results, start with a high-resolution photo. A 1200x1200 pixel source gives you flexibility to crop precisely while maintaining print quality. Our crop tool helps you center your face correctly within the required dimensions.
Tips for Home Photography
Lighting is the most important factor. Use natural daylight from a window positioned in front of you. Avoid overhead lighting that creates shadows under the eyes and chin. Two light sources at 45-degree angles produce even, shadow-free illumination.
Background should be a plain wall or a hung sheet. Ensure it’s smooth and evenly lit. Stand at least 2 feet from the background to prevent shadows.
Camera positioning should be at eye level, approximately 4-6 feet away. A smartphone camera is sufficient if the lighting is good. Use a tripod or steady surface to prevent blur.
Follow these guidelines and use our tools to prepare passport photos that meet official requirements without visiting a photo studio.
