Instagram Post Sizes

Instagram supports three main post orientations, each with specific optimal dimensions:

Square posts display at 1080x1080 pixels (1:1 aspect ratio). This is Instagram’s original format and still performs well. Square images appear consistently in both the feed and grid view.

Portrait posts are optimal at 1080x1350 pixels (4:5 aspect ratio). This vertical format takes up more screen space in the feed, potentially increasing engagement. Portrait is the most popular format for photography and lifestyle content.

Landscape posts work best at 1080x566 pixels (1.91:1 aspect ratio). This horizontal format is less common on Instagram but works well for panoramic photos and certain types of content. Note that landscape posts display smaller in the feed than portrait or square.

Instagram Story Dimensions

Stories display at 1080x1920 pixels (9:16 aspect ratio). This full-screen vertical format is designed for mobile viewing. When creating story content, keep important text and interactive elements within the central safe zone to avoid overlap with Instagram’s UI elements.

The top 250 pixels and bottom 200 pixels of a story are partially obscured by profile information and interaction buttons. Place critical content in the middle 1470 pixels for maximum visibility.

Reels Cover Photo

Reels display at 1080x1920 pixels, matching story dimensions. The cover photo thumbnail appears in your profile grid at 1080x1080 pixels (cropped from the center). Design your cover with this center crop in mind, or upload a custom thumbnail that looks good at square dimensions.

For best results, keep the focal point of your cover image centered. Text and logos placed in the center will be visible in both the reel and the grid thumbnail.

Profile Photo

Instagram profile photos display at 320x320 pixels on most devices, but upload a larger version (at least 1080x1080) for clarity. The photo is cropped to a circle, so keep important elements away from the edges.

Use a simple, recognizable image. Complex details get lost at small sizes. If you’re using a logo, ensure it is readable when displayed at 110 pixels wide on mobile screens.

Using Our Resize Tool

Our resize tool includes presets for all Instagram dimensions. Select the appropriate preset, upload your image, and download a perfectly sized version. This ensures your images match Instagram’s requirements without any guesswork.

For batch resizing, process multiple images at once using the same preset. This is especially useful when preparing a series of posts or stories with consistent dimensions.

2026 Updates

Instagram continues to favor full-screen vertical content. Reels receive the highest organic reach, and story engagement remains strong. For maximum visibility, prioritize 9:16 content in your strategy, with 4:5 posts for the main feed and 1:1 for grid consistency.
