Choosing the right target format

WebP is the best default for the web today. It supports both lossy and lossless modes plus transparency, and typically produces files 25–35% smaller than JPEG at the same visual quality. JPEG remains the universal choice for photographs when maximum compatibility matters — every device, CMS and email client made in the last three decades understands it. PNG is lossless and supports full transparency, which makes it ideal for logos, interface screenshots and graphics with flat colors, but it produces very large files for photos. AVIF, based on the AV1 video codec, squeezes files even smaller than WebP and supports HDR; browser support is now broad, though a few older tools cannot open it yet.

Transparency and quality controls

When you convert a PNG with transparent regions to JPEG, the transparency has nowhere to go. The tool detects this automatically, warns you, and offers to flatten the transparent pixels onto a white background so you never end up with an accidental black halo. For lossy targets (JPEG, WebP, AVIF) a quality slider appears; the converted file size updates live as you move it, so you can stop exactly where quality and weight balance for your use case. If your browser cannot encode AVIF, the tool tells you plainly instead of failing silently.

Website owners convert to WebP or AVIF to speed up page loads and improve Core Web Vitals. Designers convert client JPEGs to PNG to preserve crisp edges for further editing.
